VOLCANO - Pulling into the tiny town of Volcano (population 100), you wouldn't figure on finding an independent feminist publisher. You wouldn't go looking for her inside a Gold Rush-era brewery. You certainly wouldn't expect her to be 82.
Recently, Phyllis Schlafly authored a public opinion piece on the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) that did a great disservice to over two decades of domestic violence prevention work. Blaming “radical feminists” for manipulation of President Bill Clinton and the passage of the Act, she ignores facts and history. Sadly, her completely inaccurate document was printed across America. She blames “anti-male” feminists for the alleged demise of constitutional rights for male domestic violence offenders in America. She is wrong. Constitutional protections are alive and well for male abusers but finally we are providing some amount of “equal protection” for battered women.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month October is designated as a time to take collective action, to celebrate survivors, raise public awareness of domestic violence, and remember the millions of lives lost as a result of abuse. In recognition, the CA Attorney General's Office teamed up with local and statewide domestic violence organizations and other state agencies to host a Statewide Day of Awareness - Californians Uniting to End Domestic Violence on October 2, 2007 at the California State Capitol. Actress/activist/author Robin Givens presented the keynote address to the audience on the West Steps of the Capitol and then testified at a legislative hearing later in the day.
